Crew Neck Tier Dress

August 1966.

Young man working at hometown supermarket. First summer job. “Builds character.”

He is helping a woman in her 30s load brown paper bags of groceries into the back of her Ford station wagon. 

As she lifts a bag, the bottom splits and oranges spill out onto the tarmac. They kneel down to pick them up, his arm brushes against hers… scent of hot tar, oranges, and rose dusting powder.

She smiles at him and laughs. “Look,” she says, “the oranges have rolled everywhere.”

This moment will resonate in his memory for some while.
